Can you live a semi normal life with AS and multiple spinal surgeries and fusions?

Living with AS and multiple spinal fusions doesn’t mean life can’t be incredible—it all depends on managing pain and mobility. For me, the right surgeries and medications gave me my life back. The journey took nearly a decade, and I can’t predict how long this will last—months, years, or decades—but one thing is certain: I’m going to cherish every single moment while I can.

I’ve made adjustments along the way. Stress is a major trigger for me, so my doctors, family, and I decided years ago that I wouldn’t work to maintain my quality of life as my condition progressed. Instead, I focus on the things that bring joy and fulfillment. I volunteer when I can, exercise daily—jogging 6.2 miles and doing light weight training—travel, spend time with family, and mentor others with chronic illnesses. My “new normal” may look different, but it’s pretty amazing! Though I miss teaching special education, I’ve found new ways to stay engaged and busy, with the flexibility to take breaks when needed.

To anyone with AS, I encourage you to keep moving—even if it’s just one step. That’s one more step than yesterday, and it’s a small start toward staying as mobile as possible. Progress is personal, and every step counts!
